About RSPCA Cornwall Well-being Projects

RSPCA Cornwall Well-being Projects provide animal-assisted support for children, young people and young adults aged 8–25 at the Venton Animal Centre near St Columb. The programmes are designed for those experiencing barriers to education, emotional wellbeing challenges, additional learning needs or low confidence.

Through supervised interaction with rescue animals, participants develop confidence, responsibility, communication and practical life skills. Activities may include dog walking, cat socialisation, creating animal enrichment, outdoor learning and learning about animal care and welfare.

The Young People’s Project supports young people aged 11–17 who may be struggling to engage with mainstream education. Sessions typically take place one day a week during term time, helping participants build confidence, resilience and positive relationships in a supportive environment.

Bespoke 1:1 therapeutic sessions are available for children and young people aged 8–18, while the Young Adults Project supports those aged 18–25 through tailored individual or group sessions.

Rather than focusing solely on education, the programmes use meaningful animal-care experiences to encourage personal growth, emotional wellbeing, teamwork and a sense of achievement. For young people who enjoy animals, this can provide a positive and engaging route to rebuilding confidence and developing valuable life skills.
