Cornwall Marine Academy

Cornwall Marine Academy provides Post-16 education and training across Cornwall, helping young people develop skills, confidence and experience for employment and future progression.

Opportunities for young people aged 16–24 include vocational training, pre-apprenticeship programmes, Functional Skills, employability support, work experience and Supported Internships.

Young people can also access Functional Skills, including English and Maths, alongside careers guidance, employability training and preparation for work. Training can include CV and application skills, interview preparation, communication, workplace skills and marine-sector vocational learning.

Cornwall Marine Academy works closely with marine employers and provides opportunities for young people to develop practical skills and explore careers within the sector. Its wider training includes areas such as marine engineering, boatbuilding and sustainability.

Programmes vary in eligibility, duration and delivery. Families and young people can contact Cornwall Marine Academy directly to discuss which current programme may be appropriate.

Ready to Earn

CMA’s award-winning pre-apprenticeship programme supports Cornish residents aged 16–24 who aren’t yet ready for employment or an apprenticeship. Following an individual vocational profile, learners complete five accredited units at Level 1 or 2 alongside employability skills, soft skills and employer engagement. The programme can help prepare young people for employment, an apprenticeship or a Supported Internship.

Supported Internships

For young people aged 16–24 with SEND and an EHCP, CMA offers work-based Supported Internships lasting six months to a year. Learners undertake real work placements with a Job Coach, alongside Employability/Life Skills and Functional Skills Maths and English support. Job Coach support can gradually reduce as confidence and independence develop.

Referral and funding

Families can approach Cornwall Marine Academy directly, although most referrals are made through Cornwall Council. Supported Internships for young people aged 16–24 with an EHCP are funded through Cornwall Council.

Transport

CMA does not provide learner pick-ups. Where Cornwall Council agrees to fund travel costs, these can be incorporated into the programme..

Careers advice

CMA also offers impartial careers advice delivered to Level 6 professional standards.

Start dates

Learners can start throughout the year and don’t necessarily have to wait for a September intake.

Gradual transitions

CMA can gradually build up attendance for young people who have struggled with mainstream school or college attendance.

Good to know

Despite the Cornwall Marine Academy name, most delivery is not marine-focused. Programmes can be developed around wider employment and vocational interests.
