Doubletrees School – Specialist Post-16

Specialist Post-16 education in St Blazey for young people with complex and significant learning needs and EHCPs, with a strong focus on Preparing for Adulthood.

Doubletrees School is a specialist school in St Blazey supporting learners with complex and significant needs in cognition and learning, including severe, profound and multiple or complex learning difficulties.

Learners who continue to make progress socially and academically within the school’s classroom environment may have the opportunity to remain at Doubletrees for the Post-16 phase of their education.

Post-16 learning

Post-16 learners remain alongside their Upper School peers and continue to access the Upper School offer.

There is an increased focus on each young person’s individual Preparing for Adulthood outcomes, alongside additional modules from the ASDAN Personal Progress Accreditation to support preparation for life beyond school.

Preparing for adulthood

Preparing for Adulthood is embedded across the Doubletrees curriculum and includes the four areas of:

Employment • Independent Living • Community Inclusion • Health

Learning can include life skills such as cooking, travel training, money management and personal care, alongside community-based learning, work-related learning and preparation for future education or employment.

Careers and work-related learning

Doubletrees introduces learners to the world of work and future options through activities including enterprise, community-based learning, travel training, internal work experience and encounters with education and training providers.

Depending on the learner and their pathway, this can also include external work experience, volunteering, employer encounters and preparation for moving on to college or other provision.

Qualifications and accreditation

Learners who are able to access accreditation can work towards ASDAN Personal Progress and/or Functional Skills.

Post-16 learners can also access additional ASDAN Personal Progress modules as part of their preparation for adulthood.

Individualised SEND education

Learning at Doubletrees is personalised around the individual learner and their EHCP.

The school currently uses three broad curriculum pathways:

Engage – pre-formal learning
Explore – semi-formal learning
Discovery – formal learning

The curriculum is adapted to enable learners to access learning according to their individual needs.

Admission and Post-16 placement

Post-16 places at Doubletrees are allocated by the Local Authority through the EHCP and Annual Review process.

Doubletrees’ Post-16 provision is part of the wider specialist school rather than a separate college-style programme. Post-16 learners continue within the Upper School environment while receiving an enhanced focus on Preparing for Adulthood and planning for their next destination.

Post-16 places are allocated by the Local Authority through the EHCP and Annual Review process. Doubletrees Post-16 is primarily a continuation option for suitable existing learners rather than a general college course.
