Kehelland College

Kehelland College provides specialist Post-16 education for young people aged 16–25 with an EHCP, with a focus on independence, employability and preparation for adult life. Learners must be under 25 at the start of the academic year.

Learners normally attend three days a week. Two days are classroom-based and one is focused on work experience. During the first two years, work experience takes place across Kehelland Trust’s 16-acre site, with opportunities including horticulture and outdoor education, kitchen work, retail and maintenance. Third-year learners can access external work placements.

The main education programme progresses through three year-long stages:

Achieve – Year 1

Helps young people settle into college and develop independence. Activities include cooking and kitchen safety, using public transport and other independent-living skills.

Advance – Year 2

Builds on these skills with areas including looking after yourself and your home, an enterprise project, teamwork and developing skills and behaviours for the workplace.

Succeed – Year 3

Focuses more strongly on preparation for employment or volunteering, including external work experience, confidence and self-awareness, interview skills and becoming job-ready.

Bespoke Programme

Kehelland also offers a Bespoke programme for learners who may not yet feel ready to enter the main education programme or a new group setting. This can provide an academic year of individually tailored provision designed to help the young person become familiar with Kehelland and work towards outcomes that are important to them.

Practical English and Maths are embedded within classroom learning. Learners are supported by tutors and typical group size is around 10 learners, although group sizes can vary from year to year. Additional Learning Support staff, and 1:1 support can be provided where this is specified in the young person’s EHCP. Kehelland College is also licensed to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

External work experience can include longer supported placements, with Kehelland staff providing support to both the learner and employer.

Qualifications

Learners can work towards English and Maths Functional Skills with Open Awards at Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3, and Level 2. Depending on their programme, learners may also study an OCN London Award in Progression, Award in Skills for Independence & Employability or Award in Developing Personal Confidence.

SEND supported

Kehelland advises that it supports a wide variety of SEND profiles. Suitability is considered individually through the consultation process.

Learners: Must be under 25 at the start of the academic year.

Referral and funding

Kehelland’s education provision is for young people with an EHCP. Families can identify Kehelland as their preferred next-stage placement through the EHCP review process. Cornwall Council then consults with Kehelland to establish whether the provision is suitable before funding is agreed.

Families are also welcome to contact Kehelland directly for information and arrange a visit before deciding whether to request the placement.

Transport 

Eligible learners can apply for transport through Cornwall Council. As Kehelland is in a rural location and is not on a bus route, learners commonly travel by arranged taxi.

Accessibility

Kehelland has a quiet space and accessible toilets. The horticultural site is largely flat, but many areas are not wheelchair accessible. Kehelland is not equipped to support learners who require personal care.

When to enquire

Kehelland recommends that families start considering Post-16 placements from Year 10. They welcome enquiries from Year 10 learners and recommend exploring options no later than before the summer term of Year 11. An expression of interest form is the preferred route for families considering a future placement.
