Learn Your Way & Work Your Way

Cornwall Rural Community Charity (CRCC) provides alternative Post-16 SEND education and employment-focused opportunities through Learn Your Way and Work Your Way.

The programmes support young people aged 16–24 with an EHCP to develop skills for adulthood, greater independence and employment. Provision is delivered in small groups, with individual programmes shaped around each young person’s needs and goals.

Which programme?

Learn Your Way combines learning, personal development and work experience, helping young people develop qualifications, independence, confidence and employability skills.

Work Your Way has a stronger focus on preparing for employment through practical skills development and individualised work experience or employment pathways.

Not sure which is right? CRCC says this is one of the questions parents ask most frequently. Families can contact the team directly to discuss their young person’s needs and which programme may be most appropriate.

Planning ahead

CRCC recommends getting in touch around a year before you hope your young person will start. Places are limited because provision is delivered three days a week in small groups.

Referral and funding

An EHCP is required.

If a young person decides they would like to apply for a place, CRCC advises families to contact Your Future Kernow, who can meet with the family and make the referral to Cornwall Council. Cornwall Council then decides whether it will fund the placement.

What young people can work towards

  • Greater independence and everyday life skills
  • Confidence and communication
  • Employability and workplace skills
  • Practical work experience
  • Preparation for employment, training or further education
  • Increased participation in their local community

Transport

Parents need to contact the Cornwall Council Transport Department regarding transport.

Good to know

CRCC told PACE that families commonly ask about how long a young person can attend, the level of support available, transport funding and whether Learn Your Way or Work Your Way is the right programme. If you’re unsure which route may suit your young person, CRCC encourages families to get in touch directly to discuss their needs and arrange a visit.
